LA PALMERA AND HISPANIC CHAMBER HOST BUSINESS SEMINAR

Public invited to April 16 event; evening includes workshop with entrepreneurial expert

The Corpus Christi Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and La Palmera have teamed up to host “Make it Your Business” a free event designed to boost attendees’ business savvy. The event will be held on April 16, from 5-7 p.m. in center court at La Palmera and is open to the public. It includes an entrepreneurial seminar and a preview of mall renovations.

“This will be a great opportunity for us to share our new vision for La Palmera with business leaders in our community,” said La Palmera General Manager Fred Walters. “We’re happy to partner with the Corpus Christi Hispanic Chamber to present this timely seminar and share some business insight with the group. There may even be those in attendance who will someday open a store here at La Palmera.”

The workshop portion will be hosted by franchise expert John Moak, owner of Fortuna Franchise Opportunities, specializing in pairing entrepreneurs with appropriate business concepts. He will provide guidelines and discuss evaluation tools to help attendees assess their individual needs and suitability to own or start a business and to determine which business concept is the right one. Handouts and helpful checklists will be provided. The evening will end with a behind-the-scenes tour of the mall’s new retail space and food court.

"Giving our membership opportunities to gain insight during challenging times is of utmost importance,” said Corpus Christi Hispanic Chamber Chairman Chad Magill. “Adaptability can be paramount when facing tough economic business decisions; expanding our knowledge of business models and opportunities is also critical. I personally am looking forward to attending. We are pleased to partner with La Palmera in hosting the 'Make it Your Business' event, highlighting engaging and insightful entrepreneurial tools for future business needs."

Moak, a former Chamber of Commerce director himself, is a guest lecturer at the University of Southern Mississippi and regularly speaks with Chamber and small business groups.

“This is a volatile time in business,” said Moak. “People are changing jobs in an uneasy economy so by choice or by necessity, many are now looking for a new business opportunity. Being your own boss is a great thing if you can compete in the market place. However, unless you have considerable experience in the specific type business that you are considering going into, it is very probable that you will fail.

“That’s why franchising is a good option. It can set individuals up for success and long-term wealth by helping them access financing and business planning and by providing proven formulas for success and ownership support. Because so much of the research has already been done, you can, in a very real sense, try the business on before you buy to make sure it is a good fit for you. La Palmera has several opportunities for franchising and individual business owners.”

Attendees should meet in the mall’s center court area. For more information on “Make it Your Business” or La Palmera, go online to http://www.lapalmera.com/ or call (361) 991-3755.

LA PALMERA TENANTS ON THE MOVE

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (March - 2009) – As renovations are ramping up at La Palmera, shoppers are already starting to see improvements. Higher capacity escalators are currently being installed and a new elevator, located near Aeropostale on the lower level and Forever XXI on the upper level, will soon be operational.

“We plan to get conveniences such as the new elevator and escalators up and running as soon as possible as we move into the various construction phases scheduled for this year,” said La Palmera General Manager Fred Walters. “We want to make this process as easy as possible for our shoppers and tenants.”

The renovations, including an expansion to Macy’s, make it necessary for some tenants to relocate; several have accepted the opportunity to move, and some are moving into larger spaces.

Tenants relocating include Sunglass Hut, who closed their current location on Feb. 28 and will reopen this summer near Macy’s; they will maintain their kiosk location throughout the transition. Hot Topic will move to an upstairs location in March with several other stores relocating on April 1, including Aman’s Jeweler’s, moving to a space near Chick-fil-A and Gymboree; Foot Action, relocating upstairs; and EyeMasters, who will be moving to a spot near JCPenney. Spencer’s will debut their new and expanded store, also near JCPenney, sometime in April.

“We met with each and every tenant affected by the renovation plans to offer each of them a new location,” said Walters. “We’re happy that most have taken the opportunity to move although some opted not to and decided instead to close. We hate to see tenants leave but understand it is a business decision on their part.

“We are currently updating directory brochures to reflect the new store locations. Shoppers are encouraged to stop by Concierge to pick one up or ask directions.”

As work continues on the new lower level food court and new retail space upstairs, workers prepare for construction on the main entrance set to begin this month. Meanwhile, efforts continue to bring new tenants to La Palmera. Some, including the Dallas Cowboys Pro Shops and Villa Fresh Italian Kitchen, found the planned renovations to be a plus and have signed leases to open this year.

“Corpus Christi is an important market to many national retailers and franchises and the updates underway at La Palmera make it very appealing to new business.”
